Beschreibung:
View of the U.S. Navy Argus Island Tower on Plantagenet Bank, Bermuda, circa 1963. The tower was part of "Project Artemis" which was undertaken by the United States Navy in the 1960s. It produced a Low Frequency Active Sonar system that could detect submarines at long range. Part of the Artemis system was the Argus Island Tower, an oceanographic research tower, which had been erected in 1961 on Argus Bank 56 km southwest of Bermuda in 59 m of water. After eight years of use, the tower was condemned as unsafe in 1970 and was demolished in 1976.
