Trier, Hauptmarkt, Hahnenhaus und Cafe 1958
The Redhouse and Steip buildings at the corner of the Main Market and Dietrichstrasse was destroyed in 1944 and rebuilt in 1970. They were some of the most significant buildings on the Hauptmarkt. The rubble from the two buildings was cleared and a cafe run on the slightly elevated site until rebuilding commenced. This image shows that cafe, and the side of the Hahnenhaus, which was exposed after the destruction of the other two buildings.
The statuary on the wall would be transferred to the restored Steip building after 1970, and the Latin inscription restored to the front of the Red House.
The Latin inscription, "ante romam treviris stetit annis mille trecentis. perstet et æterna pace frvatvr. amen", translates to "Before Rome, Trier stood for 1300 years. May it stand on and enjoy eternal peace. Amen."
