Die Itasca entstand 1930 als ein Zoll-Kutter bzw. Sloop der Lake-Klasse der US Coast Guard in Kalifornien und wird daher auch regelmäßig als USCGC Itasca bezeichnet. Das Schiff wurde nach dem Quellsee des Mississippi, dem Lake Itasca in Minnesota, benannt.
