The Central Library This brutalist concrete jettied building of 1969-74 is built over the large roundabout of Paradise Circus. A glass roof provides light and shelter to an inner quadrangle. It was opened by Harold Wilson, however Prince Charles once said that it looked more like somewhere one would burn books rather then store them! There are now proposals to relocate the Library and demolish the building, however locally there is considerable disquiet as to whether the new library would retain the excellent collection and facilities available in its current location.
