Das Buch schildert aus MacGregors britischer Sicht Epochen der deutschen Geschichte vom Heiligen Römischen Reich bis zum vereinten Deutschland des Jahres 1990 und berücksichtigt dabei neben der Politik auch ausgiebig Kunst und Kultur.
