Totalprothese

Unter einer Totalprothese versteht man in der Zahnmedizin den Ersatz aller Zähne und des Alveolarknochens eines oder beider Kiefer durch herausnehmbaren Zahnersatz, der aus einer Kunststoffbasis aus Polymethylmethacrylat (PMMA) und den darauf befestigten künstlichen Zähnen aus Kunststoff oder Porzellan besteht. Eine Totalprothese findet im Mund durch Saugwirkung, Adhäsions- und Kohäsionskräfte und das Zusammenspiel von Muskeln Halt am Kiefer. Hierzu wird der Prothesenrand mit Hilfe einer Funktionsabformung individuell angepasst. Eine Totalprothese ersetzt nicht nur die Zähne, sondern auch den abgebauten Kiefer. Der Knochenabbau des Kieferknochens (Kieferabbau) kann aus Zahnverlust, Parodontitis oder aus Knochenresorption, verursacht durch den Auflagedruck von Prothesen, resultieren. Die Herstellung einer Totalprothese erfolgt Hand in Hand zwischen Zahnarzt und Zahntechniker. Die zahntechnische Herstellung einer Totalprothese erfolgt auf Gipsmodellen in normierten Geräten. Das Einsetzen der Prothese in einen lebenden Organismus mit all seinen individuellen Besonderheiten stellt eine der größten Herausforderungen an den Zahnarzt dar. Der Erfolg der Behandlung setzt dabei große Erfahrung voraus. Die Herstellung einer Totalprothese dauert etwa sechs Behandlungssitzungen, die sich in der Regel über einen Zeitraum von vier bis sechs Wochen erstrecken.
