Australopithecus ist eine nur aus Afrika bekannte, ausgestorbene Gattung der Menschenaffen aus der Gruppe der Australopithecina, die vor rund 4 bis 2 Millionen Jahren lebte. Die Gattung Australopithecus wird der Tribus der Hominini zugeordnet, der auch die Gattung Homo einschließlich des modernen Menschen angehört.
