Das Epstein-Barr-Virus ist eine Spezies humanpathogener, behüllter, doppelsträngiger DNA-Viren aus der Familie der Orthoherpesviridae. Erstmals beschrieben wurde das Epstein-Barr-Virus 1964 von Anthony Epstein, Yvonne Barr und Bert Achong.
