Ihre maximale Totalitätsdauer war mit 6 Minuten und 47 Sekunden ausgesprochen lang. Während dieser Finsternis entdeckte der Astronom Jules Janssen im Sonnenspektrum eine Emissionslinie, die mit keinem bisher bekannten Element in Verbindung gebracht werden konnte.
