and slender cross highly carved, as wellas the head of another ; and two slabs with inscriptions and carvingof considerable interest. On the sea shore at Stroove near Movilleis a cross inscribed pillar stone and a holy well. The cross of St Mura at Fahan is usually the first seen byvisitors to Inishowen ; it is 7 feet in height, and shaped like anordinary gravestone with pointed top. It has also the uncommonfeature of arms projecting a short distance from the sides of the^tone ; a small slab with similarly projecting arms lies in the grave-yard at Killegar, near the Scalp in County Wicklow. On eachside of the Fahan monument is an interlaced cross in low reUef ;these are probably the finest designs of their kind in the country.The cross on the east side is the more artistic and effective, thoughless elaborate than that on the west. Stroove SouterrainStroove Souterrain liegt an der Cavanagh Farm, 0,4 km nördlich des Dorfes Stroove in der Moville area im County Donegal, an der Nordostküste der Halbinsel Inishowen, in der Nähe des Inishowen Head. Das für die Nordregion Irlands typische, so genannte (rock-cut) Souterrain, wurde 1918 in der Mitte eines Feldes auf einer ebenen Strecke im ansonsten ansteigenden Gelände beim Pflügen entdeckt. Die Spuren von Werkzeugen sind auf den Felswänden zu erkennen. Bei der späteren Ausgrabung stand im mittleren Teil der Anlage 0,3 m Wasser. Die Hochwassermarke ist im Abschnitt E zu sehen. Bei Souterrains wird zwischen „earth-cut“, „rock-cut“, „mixed“, „stone built“ und „wooden“ Souterrains unterschieden. .. weiterlesen
