Great crested grebe doing a dive The adult animal was diving repeatedly whilst the chick stayed put, watching and waiting patiently for its parent to reappear. The great crested grebe (Podiceps cristatus) was hunted for its ornate head plumes, leading to near extinction, but there are now again about 9,400 breeding pairs and 19,140 wintering birds in the UK; they can be found at lowland lakes, gravel pits, reservoirs and rivers and, during the winter months, along the coast. Feeding on fish, which they hunt underwater, the birds prefer to dive, rather than fly, in order to escape, and very young grebes often ride on their parents' backs. http://www.rspb.org.uk/wildlife/birdguide/name/g/greatcrestedgrebe/index.asp
