Found in Netherby, are preserved on the spot. Amongst them is one which is figured on the adjoining page. A youth stands in a niche, a mural crown is on his head, a cornucopia in his left hand, and a patera, from which he pours out a libation on an altar, in his right; it is one of the finest carvings that is to 353be met with on the line of the Wall. From the grooves which are cut in the lower part of the stone, Genius of the Wallwe may naturally conclude, that the figure has been formerly set in masonry, perhaps to adorn the approach to some temple. Gordon supposes the figure to be intended for Hadrian; Lysons thinks that it was meant for the ‘Genius of the Wall of Severus’, Collingwood as ‘the Genius of the Barrier.

Hadrianswall

Der Hadrianswall war ein römisches Grenzbefestigungssystem des britannischen Limes, das zwischen Newcastle und Solway Firth angelegt war, nahe der heutigen Grenze zwischen Schottland und England in Großbritannien. Er wurde zwischen 122 und 128 n. Chr. auf Anordnung Kaiser Hadrians (76–138) erbaut, nachdem dieser die nördlichen Grenzen im Rahmen seiner Inspektionsreise durch alle Provinzen des Reichs besucht hatte. Der Wall erstreckte sich auf einer Länge von rund 117,5 Kilometern. Nach heute vorherrschender Sicht diente er nicht der Abwehr von Invasionen, sondern sollte in erster Linie den Handels- und Personenverkehr überwachen und an den dafür vorgesehenen Grenzübergängen kanalisieren, um dort unter anderem die Erhebung von Zöllen zu ermöglichen.
