Atlength the Spanish party unexpectedly proposedour cardinal, and having succeeded in obtaininga legal majority of votes, he was acknowledgedpope, and upon his consecration took the nameof Gregory XIV. As soon as he was settled inhis new dignity, he made large presents to eachof the cardinals; provided against the dearnessof corn and other provisions; and restored thoseRomans to their places and ofhces, whom Six-tus V. had deprived. His next object was tosignalise his zeal for the catholic faith : withwhich view, at the instigation of the Spanishambassador, he declared for tlie catholic leaguein France, and promised to furnish them with amonthly sum of fifteen thousand crowns, aslong as he should see it necessary for their de-fence.
