Die Schifffahrt im Alten Ägypten war geprägt durch die Geographie des Landes. Der Nil, das unmittelbar angrenzende fruchtbare Land unterschiedlicher Breite und die Wüste haben den Charakter einer Stromoase, aus der sich zwangsläufig eine Flussgesellschaft entwickelte. Der Fluss wurde zur Handelsstraße Ägyptens. Er stellt das Band dar, das das Land vereinigte und zusammenhielt. Ägypten ist, wie Herodot sagte, ein Geschenk des Nils. Es war daher nur konsequent, das Medium Wasser zu nutzen, und sehr früh schwimmende Untersätze und später Boote zu bauen. Der Besitz und Gebrauch von Booten war auch während der jährlichen Nilschwemme zur Fortbewegung erforderlich, da das Land überflutet und von zahlreichen Kanälen und Wasserrückhaltebecken durchzogen war.
