Fortress of st. Elisabeth in Kropyvnytskyi city, Ukraine, May 9 2025. 80 years of the Victory over Nazism. This is one of the main monuments of Central Ukraine, built by Ukrainian Cossacks on the orders of the then empress of the Russian Empire to protect against the invasion of the Ottoman Empire. This fortress also repelled the last slave-raid of the Crimean Tatars to the Ukrainian ethnic lands and gave rise to the development of southern Ukraine and the first Ukrainian city founded in the 18th century - Yelisavetgrad (Kropyvnytskyi). After World War II, one of the largest military cemeteries in the Kirovohrad Oblast was created inside the fortress - the Pantheon of Eternal Glory and the Jewish Cemetery nearby. In the 1960s, stone tombstones were built for 50,000 prisoners of war, partisans, and civilians killed by the Nazis and buried in mass graves, and in the 1980s, statues were installed.
