Michael Crawford
Michael Crawford, CBE, eigentlich Michael Patrick Dumble-Smith, (* 19. Januar 1942 in Salisbury, Wiltshire, England) zählt zu den bekanntesten britischen Musical-Schauspielern und Sängern. 2002 wurde er auf Platz 17 der 100 Greatest Britons gewählt. Internationale Berühmtheit erlangte er durch seine Verkörperung des Superhelden Condorman im gleichnamigen Film.
Leben
Michael Crawford begann seine Schauspielkarriere als Siebenjähriger. In den 1960er-Jahren spielte er in mehreren Filmen des US-amerikanischen Regisseurs Richard Lester mit, so in Der gewisse Kniff (The Knack … and How to Get It, 1964, mit der Filmmusik von John Barry), in dem Filmmusical Toll trieben es die alten Römer (A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, 1966) und in der Antikriegssatire Wie ich den Krieg gewann (How I Won the War, 1967, mit John Lennon als Nebendarsteller). Bekannt wurde er 1973 in der Rolle des Frank Spencer in der erfolgreichen BBC-Sitcom Some Mothers Do 'Ave ’Em!.
Einem Millionenpublikum wurde er in der Hauptrolle des Phantoms im Erfolgsmusical Das Phantom der Oper (The Phantom of the Opera) bekannt. Für diese Rolle erhielt er 1986 den Laurence Olivier Award und 1988 den Tony-Award. Seine Interpretation von The Music of the Night (Die Musik der Nacht) zählt noch heute, 30 Jahre nach seiner Performance in London und am Broadway, zu den beliebtesten überhaupt und dient den aktuellen Phantom-Darstellern nach wie vor als Vorbild.
Im MGM GRAND HOTEL in Las Vegas hatte Crawford in der Show EFX! 1995 Premiere. Dieses 90-minütige Musical hatte seinen Fokus auf den Spezialeffekten und erzählte mehrere Fantasy-Kurzgeschichten. Crawford übernahm in dieser spektakulären Show 4 Rollen, allerdings verletzte er sich 1996 so schwer bei einer der vielen akrobatischen Einlagen, dass er die Show verlassen musste.
Im September 2002 kehrte er an den Broadway zurück, als Count Giovanni von Krolock in Dance of the Vampires, einer an vielen Stellen stark überarbeiteten Fassung des österreichisch-deutschen Kultmusicals Tanz der Vampire. Obwohl dem Musical kein Erfolg beschieden war und Ende Januar 2003 der letzte Vorhang fiel, wurde er für seine Darstellung mit dem Drama Desk Award geehrt.
Danach übernahm er die Rolle des Count Fosco in Andrew Lloyd Webbers neuem Musical The Woman in White, gab diese aber aus gesundheitlichen Gründen auf.
Am 9. Januar 2006 wohnte er der Galavorstellung von Das Phantom der Oper bei, die das Musical zum am längsten laufenden in Londons Musical-Geschichte auszeichnete und damit Cats ablöste.
2011 spielte er im London Palladium die Titelrolle in Webbers Musical-Adaption von Der Zauberer von Oz. Am 2. Oktober 2011 trat er in der Royal Albert Hall im Finale zum 25-jährigen Jubiläum von Das Phantom der Oper, bei der er allerdings nicht sang[1], auf.
Am 27. Mai 2016 kehrte er ans Londoner West End zurück und spielte am Apollo Theatre die Hauptrolle des Colston in The Go-Between, einer Musical-Adaption des gleichnamigen Romans von L. P. Hartley.

Michael Crawford actor in Sydney for ABC Shop Media Gig; New CD For Fans
The famous Brit actor Michael Crawford today did an in store appearance at the ABC Shop, Queen Victoria Building to promote his new CD 'The Story of My Life'.
The original Phantom Of The Opera credits the launch of a new career retrospective The Story of My Life in Australia for inspiring his desire to sing again.
The 70-year-old musical theatre genius, who now resides in New Zealand's North Island, has been quite recluse like for the past few years after suffering chronic fatigue syndrome but now hopes to start "practising" his voice again soon.
Crawford told media the baby boomer love affair with the soundtrack of their youth was to blame for vintage rock, pop and theatre stars continuing their careers well beyond retirement.
"Look at The Stones; they were the worst example of the way to live and there they are still on the road filling stadiums," Crawford said.
"We all have got our own audience but with the baby boomer era there are a lot of people between 50 and 75 who still love music. It's a massive audience who are still around and went to see the acts they saw when they were 19. They go and see those people because there hasn't been anyone to supersede them."
Crawford invested 30 years practising vocal exercises five hours a day to keep his voice in shape for his musical theatre career, which bloomed after playing Frank Spencer in the TV comedy Some Mothers Do Have 'Em.
"That's what it entails to hit these notes and to have that sensitivity in your voice. It's athletic, this singing," he said.
"I don't know if I would have the strength to do some of the notes - I'd really have to go back and work hard."
Crawford has been a big hit with Aussie audiences throughout his acting and singing careers, selling more than one million albums here.
Who can forget catchphrases "Oh, the cat did a whoopsie in my beret" and "Betty". Then there's his rendition of the Phantom's signature anthem The Music Of The Night.
Despite his many sold-out concert tours of Australia, Crawford regards himself more as an "actor/singer" than a recording star.
"I am an actor/singer more than anything; I tell silly stories about myself, which is why people come to see me. We have fun," he said.
