Fanny Howe

Fanny Howe (* 15. Oktober 1940 in Buffalo, New York) ist eine US-amerikanische Dichterin und Schriftstellerin.

Leben

Howe wurde 1940 in Buffalo als Tochter des Historikers und Juristen Mark De Wolfe Howe und der irischen Schriftstellerin und Schauspielerin Mary Manning geboren. Ihre ältere Schwester ist die Dichterin Susan Howe (* 1937).^[1] Howe wuchs in Cambridge, Massachusetts, auf und studierte später an der Stanford University. Danach schlug sie eine Karriere als Hochschullehrerin ein, die sie unter anderem an das MIT und die Tufts University.^[2] Daneben engagierte sie sich in der Bürgerrechtsbewegung und heiratete den afroamerikanischen Schriftsteller Carl Senna, mit dem sie drei Kinder bekam, darunter die Schriftstellerin Danzy Senna. Nach der Scheidung von Senna zog Howe nach Kalifornien,^[3] wo sie eine Lehrstelle an der University of California, San Diego annahm.^[2] Nach ihrer Emeritierung im Jahr 2000 zog sie zurück an die US-Ostküste, wo sie zunächst auf Martha’s Vineyard und später wieder in Cambridge, Massachusetts, lebte.^[1]

Howes schriftstellerisches Werk besteht hauptsächlich aus Gedichten und Romanen, zu kleineren Teilen auch aus Kurzgeschichten, Young Adult-Büchern und Essays. Die Poetry Foundation beschrieb Howes lyrischen Stil wie folgt: „Indeed, more than a subject or theme, the process of recording experience is central to Howe’s poetry. Her work explores grammatical possibilities, and its rhythms are generated from associative images and sounds.“^[2] Geprägt wird Howes Werk auch von ihrem katholischen Glauben.^[4] Howe konvertierte 1982 zum Katholizismus;^[1] sie ist Anhängerin der Befreiungstheologie.^[5] Howes Vorlass befindet sich in der Bibliothek der Stanford University;^[6] ihr Notiz- und Tagebücher sind im Besitz der Harvard University Library.^[1]
