Cyrus Griffin

Cyrus Griffin (* 16. Juli 1749 in Farnham, Richmond County, Colony of Virginia; † 14. Dezember 1810 in Yorktown, Virginia) war ein US-amerikanischer Politiker und zehnter Präsident des Kontinentalkongresses der Konföderation. Er hatte dieses Amt vom 22. Januar 1788 bis zum 2. November 1788 inne, ehe es abgeschafft wurde.
Griffin kam in Virginia zur Welt, wurde aber in England erzogen und studierte an der Universität Edinburgh in Schottland. Während er sich dort aufhielt, heiratete er die Tochter eines schottischen Adligen.
Nach der Rückkehr nach Amerika schlug Griffin eine politische Laufbahn ein. Von 1777 bis 1778 gehörte er dem House of Delegates von Virginia an, ein weiteres Mal von 1786 bis 1787. Mitglied des Kontinentalkongresses war er von 1778 bis 1780 sowie von 1787 bis 1788. In diesem Jahr trat er die Nachfolge von Arthur St. Clair als Präsident des Kongresses unter den Articles of Confederation an.
Cyrus Griffin war Präsident des Obersten Gerichtshofs der Admiralität von seiner Gründung bis zu seiner Abschaffung. 1789 wurde er zum Beauftragten für die Creek-Indianer berufen. Im selben Jahr übernahm er den Posten eines Richters am Bundesbezirksgericht für den Distrikt Virginia, den er bis zu seinem Tod bekleidete. Er wurde in Williamsburg an der Seite seiner Frau beigesetzt.

The first great seal, having the eagle and the Latin motto "E Pluribus Unum," meaning "Many in One,"—or one nation made up of many states,—was adopted June 20, 1782.
