Carlton ist eine Town in Nottinghamshire und eine zum Borough of Gedling gehörende Vorstadt, die bis 1974 eigenständig war. Gemeinsam mit den umliegenden Siedlungen Carlton Hill, Cavendish, Colwick, Gedling, Netherfield, Phoenix und Porchester bildete sie einen Bezirk, der heute ca. 48.000 Einwohner zählt.
Geschichte
Im Domesday Book von 1086 wird die Ortschaft als Carentune erwähnt. Während im 19. Jahrhundert hier vor allem die Textilindustrie florierte, ist die Ortschaft heute vor allem eine Schlafstadt des nahen Nottingham.
Lage
Carlton liegt etwa vier Kilometer ostnordöstlich vom Stadtzentrum Nottinghams entfernt. Der Bahnhof von Carlton liegt an der Bahnlinie von Nottingham nach Lincoln.

The descent into Carlton Valley The area to the east of Nottingham abounds in steep hills where valleys have been cut into the relatively soft mudstones. This is Prospect Road.

St Paul's, Carlton-in-the-Willows. The church was designed by W. A. Coombs.
An elderly gentleman who approached me as I started to photograph the building told me that he was just finishing-off a book of the history of the church and that it was built for the 4th Earl of Carnarvon and it sat unfinished for six years after the money ran-out. This is somewhat confirmed by its listing (Grade II) description which dates it as 1885 and 1891.
A plaque on the outside of the chancel confirms the patronage 1738840.

Carlton Laundry A laundry and dye works building on Marhill Road / Primrose Street.
This is a Watson Fothergill design from 1899. Its listing (Grade II status) description currently describes it as being in use as a print works. It has however now been converted into apartments.
In the near corner is the base of the, now removed, chimney. To the left is a new build apartment block built in a similar style, presumably at the same time that the laundry was converted.
