Asher Brown Durand (* 21. August 1796 in Jefferson Village, heute Maplewood, New Jersey; † 17. September 1886 in Maplewood, New Jersey) war ein US-amerikanischer Maler der Hudson River School sowie Zeichner, Kupferstecher und Illustrator.
Er war der Bruder des Stechers Cyrus Durand (1787–1868) und des Goldschmiedes und Stechers John Durand (1792–1820).
Asher Brown Durand gehörte 1826 zu den Gründern der National Academy of Design in New York, von 1845 bis 1861 hatte er deren Präsidentschaft inne.[1] Durand war der erste amerikanische Maler, der vor der Natur arbeitete.

Kindred Spirits was commissioned by the merchant-collector Jonathan Sturges as a gift for William Cullen Bryant in gratitude for the nature poet's eulogy to Thomas Cole, who had died suddenly during early 1848. It shows Cole, who had been Jonathan Sturges mentor, standing in a gorge in Catskills in the company of mutual friend William Cullen Bryant.
