Singkawang (auch San Khew Jong: 山口洋) ist eine Großstadt der Provinz Kalimantan Barat, Indonesien, und hat 239.260 Einwohner (2021).[1]
Geographie
Geographische Lage
Singkawang liegt an der Westküste Borneos am Südchinesischen Meer. Als eigenständige Verwaltungseinheit (Kota) grenzt es an die Regierungsbezirke Sambas und Benkayang der gleichen Provinz.
Stadtgliederung
Sinkawang untergliedert sich in fünf Kecamatan (Distrikt), die sich wiederum in 26 Kelurahan (Stadtteil) unterteilen.

Geschichte
Sinkawang war lange Zeit eine Ansiedlung, die zum Sultanat Sambas gehörte. Die Stadt diente als Umschlagsplatz für den Goldhandel der nahe gelegenen Goldminen in Monterado. Viele der Händler und Bergleute kamen aus China.[2]

The emblem of West Kalimantan Province, Indonesia, achieved in 1964. The emblem took forl of five sided shield that represent Pancasila. The green shield contain the image of hexagonal dayak shield, mandau dayak blade, kris. The line across the center, flame, rice and cotton ears. Shield, mandau and kris symbolize the culture of main ethnicity in West Kalimantan; Dayak and Malay. The flame symbolize the everlasting fighting spirit. Rice and cotton symbolize prosperity.
